Why is it so important to have enough protein in our diets and how can it really help us?
Protein is the bricks with which the body builds all its structures, from skin, hair, nail and bones to, of course, muscle. However, the idea of a diet high in protein often leads to confusion and questions such as, is it really safe for me to have that much protein? Or isn’t it just for people who wish to achieve the physique of a body-builder?
These are common misconceptions that just simply aren’t true. A diet which is high in protein is most certainly safe and everyone should be eating more protein.
When it comes to improving our health and well-being getting enough protein in our diet is vital as it plays a part in helping weight loss, building muscle, increased cardiovascular health, disease prevention and helps to improve sleep quality.
Those of us who exercise regularly need protein in our diets. Getting sufficient protein throughout the day from a wide variety of good protein sources, such as fish, eggs, dairy, poultry, lean beef or beans and nuts, allows our muscles to repair and rebuild bigger and stronger after exercise.
This means that when you eat protein you increase the rate of protein production in the body which helps the repair and rebuilding process, whilst also suppressing the process of protein breakdown. This process can lead to us having stronger more muscular and leaner bodies that perform better during exercise and in everyday life, while looking better too. Which is what we all want right?!
How much should we have? My rule for men is eating two palm sized portions of protein with meals, for instance two chicken breasts, and one portion with snacks, such as a boiled egg. For women I recommend half of this. Eating this amount of protein can also contribute greatly to helping weight-loss.
This is because protein is great for helping us beat our hunger and cravings. Food that are high in protein are filling. So eating them throughout the day suppresses appetite and keeps us satisfied to help to prevent overeating and binging on sugary or fatty high calorie foods, especially late at night! Which is, of course, very important when we’re looking to manage our weight.
Overall, getting enough protein from our food is vitally important as it can contribute to helping us all live long healthy happy lives, through helping to contribute to the main principles of health; Physical strength, muscle mass, leanness, bone health, lower blood pressure and most importantly brain health. So next time you’re about to eat a meal consider your protein intake, are you eating enough?
