Are you starting back this January out of guilt, OR are you finally committed to feeling ‘good’ about how you look and feel.  Almost 22 per cent of people who join this January will have thrown in the towel after 6 months. A further 20 per cent will disappear before December. So how can you stop yourself from being another statistic, and why do so many of you fail time and time again?  Having held consultations with 100s of personal training clients over the years here are three tips to avoid another year of throwing away cloths that no longer fit.

No.1 Have a goal & track it
Everyone should have a measurable reason for joining the gym in January; if you don’t you’ll only be disappointed come February.  Whether it’s fitting in a particular pair of jeans or just feeling comfortable in your skin, find a way to measure it.  For our clients we take photos & record measurements so that there can be no hiding from the truth – everybody can get results, it’s a waist of your time and money no to.  Alternatively, if you are changing then it can be incredibly motivating to see your body improve over time.  Casual comments from co-workers, family and friends, are icing on the proverbial cake!

No.2 Eat Instinctively not counting calories or dieting
Everybody has a basic knowledge what they should and shouldn’t eat: however many of us still feel the need to go on some fad diet as a shortcut.  Your diet should be what you eat all year round, not for 4 weeks after a gastronomic blowout!  Your body doesn’t work in days or weeks: a month of healthy living won’t put you in good stead years down the line.
My particular bug bear are those plans that allow you to eat on a points system, without weaning you off toxic or calorie dense foods – so that when you stop (and you will stop), all that weight comes crashing back plus 10%.  The most healthy and successful body transformation clients don’t diet, they eat healthy week after week, and when they do lapse, they screw the nut to make up for it.

No.3 Consult and expert
This may sound like a blatant sales pitch but it isn’t.  A personal trainer is critical to systemizing your exercise program for maximum results and assisting you in heightening your motivation and strengthening your commitment.  Everyone can benefit from consulting an expert, especially if your health, you must have a plan of action.  Choosing exercises on the basis of what isn’t being used wont get you anywhere near your goals.  If your budget doesn’t spread that far, find someone who has seen results with their trainer or, conquered their fitness goals & train with them.  Don’t just go down the gym with a weak willed colleague and chat about the markets.
